The sunshine looks set to stay, so here’s a sunny little guide book to our glorious city. First published in 1952, the beautiful front cover shows the sun focussing on Brighton and Hove in Regency times. My first thought, of course, is that it must have been exceedingly warm in four layers of wool. It’s strange to think that today plenty of people walk around the streets in little more than swimwear! Here the men are in stiff starched collars, and the women are covered up in floor length dresses.
Tempting as it is to strip off and go for a swim, I am actually hard at work looking for old books. Although I do tend to ‘focus on Brighton and Hove,’ I travel all over Sussex and the South East. Last week I bought old books in Haywards Heath, Worthing and Hassocks. Next week I’m going to Hailsham and Eastbourne. Might I visit you, too? You never know! If you have a collection of old books, magazines, postcards, maps or ephemera I might well be interested in buying it. The best way to start is with a phone call. I need to buy good quality material for the big summer fairs in London and Bath, and I am already looking ahead to the autumn season of fairs, beginning in September in York. Please do call me if you have anything to sell. If it’s on paper, please get in touch – it’s worth a call, and you never know…
