Warwici Inhabitatus; or, The Saxton Map Of Warwickshire

Are you on the map? This one of Warwickshire dates from 1607 and my photo shows the traditional centre of England, Meriden, apparently now usurped by a field in Leicestershire. Damn computers. The map was published originally in 1579 by Christopher Saxton in his ‘Atlas of England and Wales’ and then re-engraved and re-issued many times over the next two centuries. This copy dates from 1607. If you google ‘Saxton Map Warwickshire’ you will find images of the whole map. In the part shown here we can see top left the village of  ‘Bromicham vulgo Bermicham’, the city of Coventre, a place called Non Eaton and the many rivers which cross the county. Roads are not shown. There’s another tasty treat tomorrow…
